If youโre an aspiring songwriter, you probably want to soak up as much knowledge and insight on the craft as you can.
And the best way to do that is to listen to other people talk about the art of songwriting.
Thatโs why in this post weโll give you our take on the very BEST songwriting podcasts weโve come across.
These podcasts go into the craft and business of songwriting from multiple perspectives and are an invaluable resource for anyone interested in this thing we do.
If youโre brand new to songwriting, definitely check out our complete beginnerโs guide on how to write songs.
And if you’re struggling with ideas on what to write about, check out our list of songwriting prompts and ideas.
Otherwise, letโs get into the listโฆ
And The Writer Isโฆ
This is probably one of my favorite songwriting podcasts from the perspective of the writers themselves.
I was put onto this pod a few years ago from a singer/songwriter friend and I got super addicted to it, bingeing every episode as quickly as I could.
So much insight and knowledge gets shared on the REAL โindustryโ side of the songwriting game.
Itโs honestly crazy fuckin inspiring to listen to…
It features interviews with some of the biggest songwriting names in the world, each done by another hit songwriter, Ross Golan.
Definitely worth a bingeโฆ
Dissect
This isnโt specifically a โsongwritingโ podcast but itโs a definite must listen to anyone who wants to create great music.
Cole Cuchna digs down deep into the artistic brilliance of some of the best music to ever be released.
Each season features a different album, and Cole goes through each track episode by episode, breaking down the intricate writing and composition of the artist.
This is another podcast I immediately binged when I found it. I donโt remember exactly how I came across it, but I was immediately hooked back in 2018.
Thereโs definitely a heavy Hip-Hop slant to the show, but the latest season featured a Radiohead album.
Regardless, every single music fan and creator should listen, regardless of genre, because Cole does an amazing job showing you the intricate and sometimes mind-bending artistry of these albums.
Get ready to have your mind blownโฆ
Song Exploder
Rounding out the top 3 songwriting podcasts is Vultureโs Song Exploder.
This is another great listen for songwriters because each episode, though short, hears an artist breaking down one of their songs, piece-by-piece.
In terms of genres and artists covered, this pod is all over the place. And thatโs a good thing because sometimes you can get inspired from the places you are least likely to look.
In other words, itโs good to get outside perspectives on things โ and youโll find that in this show.
The premise of this show is the artist breaks down the sounds and ideas that went into the song while being written and produced.
Definitely worth a listenโฆ
Broken Record
Up next is another great podcast for creators of all kinds, but since itโs music-focused, itโs an even greater podcasts for people who write songs.
Rick Rubin, one of the hosts of the show, is a legendary music producer behind some of the most iconic and classic albums to have been released since the 1980s.
Each episode features a different musician talking about the craft of music creation and their inspiration.
Itโs not a podcast that necessarily talks exclusively about how the craft is done, but itโs just as valuable and can lead to a lot of creative insights.
Check it outโฆ
Song Craft
This songwriting podcast features hour long interviews with some of the major songwriters throughout recent music history.
Although itโs called Song Craft, the focus of each show is to get the life and career story of each of the people being interviewed.
Naturally, craft becomes a part of the conversation but it delves beyond just the making of the song.
Itโs a great listenโฆ
Final Thoughts
There are a ton of podcasts out there and Iโm sure thereโs a lot more than the 5 listed above that I would absolutely love.
But just search for โsongwritingโ on Spotify and youโll see hundreds of different shows.
Are they all great? Probably not. But as I listen to more and more shows about songwriting, song structure, music creation and creativity in general Iโll be sure to keep this list updated with new finds that I think are phenomenal.
If you really want to level up your songwriting skills, I highly recommend you join HitSongsDeconstructed – they’re the best resource on the internet I’ve found on how to write hit songs.
Thanks for reading my take on the best songwriting podcasts out today. Listen to a few episodes from each show! Theyโre definitely worth it.
